Poland redeploys buffer zone on Belarus border to discourage migrants

WARSAW — Poland on Monday introduced plans to redeploy a no-entry buffer zone on its border with Belarus later this week, in a bid to discourage unlawful migrants from coming into the nation.

In Could, Warsaw and the West blamed Belarus and its ally Russia for orchestrating the inflow of African migrants, as a part of a “hybrid” assault designed to destabilize the area and the EU.

The goal is “to make it tougher for unlawful migrants to cross the Polish-Belarussian border and to create higher working circumstances for the border guards, military and police” deployed there, Prime Minister Donald Tusk informed reporters.

The buffer zone can be operational from Thursday.

Final week, a Polish soldier who was patrolling the border was fatally stabbed by a migrant.

Talking on TVN24, Deputy Inside Minister Czeslaw Mroczek stated the buffer zone will prolong over two sections and greater than 60 kilometers (37 miles) in areas the place there are the best variety of unlawful crossings.
