There might not have been a stage win or a pink jersey ready for him atop the Puerto de Ancares, however this nonetheless had all the texture of a classic Primož Roglič afternoon on the Vuelta a España. The wickedly steep slopes of the ascent clearly lent themselves to his skills, and the Slovenian responded by doing what he’s been doing as a matter of routine on this race since 2019.

Pink Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe first marketed their chief’s intentions by setting a supersonic tempo from the foot of the Ancares. Then, because the gradient bit in earnest, Roglič steadily dialled up the warmth, burning all-comers off his wheel and striding ever nearer to closing total victory in Madrid. So it goes.
